Some Words About Language Learning

“I learnt an awful lot at DLC…”
THE PATRON SAINT OF DOVER LANGUAGE CENTRE WELCOMES YOU!
About language study in general In Hungary, like just about anywhere else in the world, globalization has oblidged many to use another language, or other languages. The unskiled agricultural worker, the nurse, the taxi driver, the mature female bathroom attendant, the actor, the doctor, the scientific researcher, etc. – all have experienced that it is no longer enough to know just Hungarian. Many among us, in the hopes of a better standard of living, have packed up stakes and tried their luck (in many cases, blind luck) abroad. Until arriving at a certain level of language knowledge (perhaps the level at which we begin to enjoy the language), for most, language study is merely a hump on one’s back – at the very least, a large burden. Language knowledge is of decisive importance and not just for our careers. It fosters a certain openness and flexibilty in our personalities. It can significantly improve our way of thinking, our outlook, and our self esteem. What is wrong with language study? In general, Hungarian speakers place little faith in the study of foreign languages. They believe it comes easier to other races. However, a simple change of attitude would open up an entirely new world. Difficulty in acquiring a language is not a question of race, but of the individual’s point of embarkation. All nations have particular circumstances, initiatives, customs, and traditions that can make language acquisiton easier or more difficult for the entire comunity. An example of such a drawback in Hungary is synchronization. Practically 100% of foreign-language programming is shown in Hungarian. Another factor that inhibits Hungarians is that we have no tradition of training students in public speaking. That is why it is difficult for us to speak up in our own mother tongue. On the same token, people find it profoundly easier to open up (especially about their private lives) in a foreign language. Up until recently, the conscious application of exceptionally well-taught Hungarian grammar was an immense advantage in language acquisition. With a little thought and some guidance from the teacher, those who possessed this basic knowledge could overcome the differences between Hungarian and foreign-language logic and eventually achieve the very highest level of language mastery. A similar advantage, in recent times, has been the lifting of travel restrictions. The need to communicate in various situations sets the imagination at work. Well-prepared and empathetically conducted situational coaching not only makes language study easier, but turns it into a real experience. For Hungarians, one very interesting and thought-provokingly good tool for dissolving language inhibitions is the fact that, with transmission through English, one of the few words of Hungarian origin that has found usage worldwide is the coaching word. It originates from the word kocsi. We can understand it as the practice or training that transports us to knowledge and mastery. That is already one good reason not to be inhibited in foreign-language practice situations. The foundation of successful language study begins with an open mind (a certain psychological condition) and, once completed, ends in the creation and development of a certain capactiy for concentration in the student. Dover Language Centre’s group courses (as well as its soon-to-begin e-learning programme) are person-centered. In teaching the basics, though primarily in the mastery of professional langauge (at a level where one can present and negotiate), we employ the directorial skills of theatre and media experts. This method demans of our teachers greater psychological and profession expertise than one would encounter in an everyday language class. Teaching material is thoughtfully put together, placing equal stress upon grammar and communication coaching. This filters out the faddish methods and generalizing -isms that so often appear in modern language instruction. In addition to the teaching methods independently developed by Dover Language Centre, we do not exclude the use of modern, internationally accepted techniques. Throughout the instruction, teachers at the school employ master secrets and techniques perfected in the course of regular workshops amongst themselves or private consultations with school leaders.
